4WD & Car Fridges FAQs:

• 1. Will the car fridge drain my car battery?

  Your car's starter battery needs enough voltage to start the engine. If you're running your fridge directly from the starter battery, brands like Dometic recommend setting the fridge to Medium or High voltage mode.

  This setting ensures the fridge stops drawing power when the battery voltage drops too low, preventing a dead battery. For starter batteries, use the High setting to avoid draining them.

  If you're using a house (auxiliary) battery, you can safely set it to Low.

• 2. What do I need to know about installing my 12v compressor fridge in my van?

  Installation instructions will come with your 12V Compressor Fridge. The installation/manual document will also cover:

  • Recommended ventilation
  • Side and rear gap sizes for installing in your RV cavity
  • Mounting
  • Wiring

  Depending on the model, there will also be information regarding; maintenance, cleaning, defrosting, energy saving tips, reversible doors, inserting new door panels and troubleshooting.

• 3. With a Dual Zone fridge can I use only one section? How do I get the most out of each zone?

  Yes, you can switch either compartment off independently whilst running the other compartment. The default setting is to run the small compartment as a freezer and the large compartment as a fridge.

  Dometic recommends setting them at -15C and 4C respectively, for normal use, in order to optimise the performance and energy consumption.
