Although you may feel like this is unnecessary, it’s surprising how many people get homesickness while they are away. Just adding little bits and pieces here and there will add your personality and increase how comfortable you are in your van, especially because you’re spending so much time in there.
Kitchen
It can get frustrating when you don’t have all the comforts of your kitchen at home with you while you’re travelling. This can mean a non-rusty can opener, fry pans that don’t stick or maybe even just having glad wrap on board. While it can be hard to know what you like to have on board with you until it’s too late, have a bit of a brainstorm in the weeks ahead of your trip and work out what you can’t live without when you’re preparing meals.
Bedding
Similar to the kitchen, it’s a good idea to make sure you don’t skimp out on the modern luxuries of your bedroom. If you have expensive, soft pillows at home, make sure you take them with you in the van. Just because you’re effectively camping, doesn’t mean you have to use your ugly spare doona covers. Treat your caravan bedroom like your bedroom at home, and you will be more comfortable.
Bathroom
While there are space restrictions you need to be conscious of, if you want to take your loofah because you use it every day at home, then take your loofah. A smooth transition from home to caravan (especially for longer trips) is essential. Use your normal shampoo and conditioner (not those travel sized ones) and a nice bath towel.
Flooring
The vinyl in your caravan can sometimes feel a little sterile, especially in the cold if winter. Why not bring along a little rug or two to break up the spaces and add some colour to the van. Flooring parallels with how homely it feels. It can really control the overall vibe of the space.
Accessories
Having little knick-knacks around your caravan will really personalise your space. From little personal ornaments, to photo frames with you and your loved one, stylish cushions and fragrance sticks. These little touches go a long way to making it feel like you never left home. Whatever accessories you choose to include, just make sure they aren’t breakable when the van is being towed or at least make sure they are secured.
Having your personal touches with you when you are heading on your road trip is really important. It is often overlooked when packing the van with considerably more important belongings like toothbrushes, food and underwear. While keeping those weight restrictions in mind, take whatever it is you want for you to feel at home in your freedom machine.
