Q & A

  • Will this replace my existing Air Con?

The Dometic Freshjet range utilises either a 360x360mm or 400x400mm cut out size, which will cover most existing Air Conditioners.

  • Would I need to use an air purifier in the van when this is installed?

No, the Dometic Freshjet range is the first of its kind to offer a inbuilt air purifier. This is called the ClearAir system, which will keep the van smelling fresh and clean while greatly reducing allergens, viruses, bacteria and pollutants.

  • Does the Freshjet have a WIFI or Bluetooth feature?

The Freshjet range offers WIFI and Bluetooth, meaning you will be able to operate your AC from your phone.

  • I have very limited room on the roof of my van due to solar panels and hatches. What is the smallest roof top air con you have available?

Check out the new Fresh Jet 7 Series Lite. It packs a punch with 2.6kw cooling capacity for vans, buses and motorhomes up to 5m. It measures 752x 518 x 225.

  • I have a van with a thicker roof, will I need anything else for install?

The Freshjet range comes with ducting to suit up to 60mm roof thickness. If you roof exceeds this, you will require additional ducts which you can find in the accessories list.

  • I have a 2.4Kva generator and want to install a new Air Con. Will my generator that has continous output of 2100watts run the Freshjet 7 Series Pro?

The new range of Freshjet Series 7 Air Conditioners come backed with inverter technology, which means there isn't a huge in rush of current at start up. Meaning the entire range of Freshjet Series 7 will run off generators above 2 kva. Don't forget to be mindful if anything else is running off the generator at the same time

  • Does this AC come pre-gassed?

The Freshjet range will come pre-gassed ready for install. This latest range of Dometic AC's are using a more sustainable R32 refrigerant.

  • Why can't I activate the sleep function?

The sleep function is only available when using the cooling or heating modes. Ensure you are in either one of these modes, then set your required temperature, press the moon button and the sleep function should be activated (the moon symbol will appear on the air distribution box display when it is activated).

  • I intend to run my Caravan Air Conditioner from a Generator as we will be staying in unpowered locations and my battery bank is not big enough to run the AC for very long. What size Generator do you recommend running my Caravan AC?

The answer is quite simple, and it just depends on the Caravan Aircon model you have. If you have one of the newer Caravan Aircon models that include inverter technology within the compressor (such as the Dometic FreshJet 7 Series Plus or Dometic FreshJet 7 Series Pro Aircon models), then a 2000w inverter generator will be fine.

If you have an Aircon model that does not include inverter technology within the compressor (of which there are many new and old Aircon models on the market that do not have inverter tech), then we would recommend a minimum 2200-2400w inverter generator. This is because the Aircon models without inverter technology in the compressor require a bit more power on start up.

Please note that the above sizing advice does not take into consideration any other appliances running and drawing power from the generator at the same time as the Aircon is running.

As a general rule, depending on the above criteria of Aircon compressor type, most of our Caravan customers will opt for a generator of around 2000 to 3500 watts in size. There are other larger inverter generator models available from 4000 to 6500 watts in size, but these are less commonly used by caravan/RV owners.

    Popular Caravan Generator models include:

  • Can I run my Caravan Air Conditioner from my Caravan Battery Bank?

The short answer is yes, it is possible. However, there are a few extra important things to consider.

The main thing is how long you will be able to run your Aircon for. Let us take one of the more popular and energy efficient Caravan Aircon models on the market: the Dometic FreshJet 7 Series Pro: The peak power draw is around 1400w to 1500w. So, you could use a quality 2000w+ inverter (note that Caravan Aircons are 240V) with say a 200ah lithium battery and you will get around 1-2 hours Aircon run time, before you must recharge the batteries again. Depending on how you recharge your batteries (DC to DC charger, solar, mains power etc.), this charging will take time.

So once again; you can do it with certain batteries & inverters if you are aware of how that will affect your battery storage and charge loss... and knowing how to manage that system.

You can get a larger lithium battery system to run your Aircon for longer, but obviously this will cost more, so that needs to be considered. It is certainly a big recent trend that our RV customers are installing quality lithium battery systems to run their Caravans/Motorhomes etc. However, running an Aircon unit can be one of the larger power drawing appliances in your van, so it pays to consider your power system's capabilities and how long you want to run the Aircon.

If you are just pulling up for short stops (1-2hrs) and you are doing a lot of driving, you can run your Caravan Aircon from your lithium batteries for this short time. Many RV owners do this, and as new Caravan Aircon models become increasingly energy efficient and lithium battery advancements evolve to be cheaper, more powerful, and even lighter, then we will certainly see this trend increase. However, currently the popular and often cost-effective choice to run your Aircon if you do not have access to mains power (i.e., free camping) is to use a small inverter generator. You can get a quality 2000-2400w sized inverter generator from around $1,000-$1,500 and these will run many RV Aircon units for 7+ hours before having to refuel.

So once again, you can use a battery system, but it is not always the most practical option. For more advice on Power Systems to run your Caravan/RV, feel free to give us a call on: 1800 787 278.

  • I'm looking at buying one of your Caravan Air Conditioner models for my 20ft Caravan. What do I need to know about installation and set once I get the AC unit delivered?

Hi there, fitting and Install instructions come with each Aircon unit, but it is advised a qualified installer (electrical contractor) undertakes the installation.

  • What are the noise levels of your Caravan Air Conditioner units? I'm looking for a quiet model.

This is a commonly asked question by Caravan/RV owners; however, it is unfortunate that Caravan Aircon manufacturers do not provide dBA ratings in their product model specifications.

We can say that we only sell high quality Air Conditioners from premium brands in the RV industry. The only time we have encountered an issue with noise is when the install was not undertaken correctly which can cause a rattle. However, if you ensure the install is done properly, there will be no issues with any of our RV Aircon units being too noisy.

One other piece of feedback we can provide, is that the two latest Dometic Aircon models (Harrier and Ibis4) have inverter technology within the compressor, meaning any vibration is minimised. Our customers and our internal testing suggest that when these models are operating at high cooling mode, the noise level is very, very low, making them arguably the quietest Aircon models in the market.

  • What advancements have Dometic made with the new 7 Series Plus unit?

The new 7 Series Plus has a larger colling capacity, an in built air purifier, and improved efficiency meaning longer run time on batteries and generators. The unit has managed to remain the same weight as the previous Harrier Plus unit.

  • Do the new range of Freshjet have the same Air Distribution Box (ADB)?

Yes, the new Freshjet units have one ADB that is standard across the whole range

  • Will this air-conditioner work off a 2000w generator?

Hi there - yes, this new air-conditioner model uses an inverter compressor which significantly reduces startup power demands. Therefore, one of its most appealing features is that it will comfortably start and run on a 2000-watt inverter generator.

Most other air-conditioner models will require more than 2000 watts to start up.

  • How often do I need to service my Dometic RV/Caravan appliances?

Dometic recommend servicing their gas appliances on a yearly basis, even if the vehicle has not been used. Additionally, bear in mind that insects can built nests in the gas appliances which will cause the appliances to stop working. It can also cause potentially dangerous scenarios.

For other appliances, such as refrigerators and air conditioners, to ensure the appliances to work efficiently and last longer it is recommended to clean the condenser.

  • With air conditioner ratings, why are some specifications for the same model different between suppliers and information sources relating to things like cooling capacity?

Hi, good question. With ratings such as cooling capacity, two different numbers can both be correct – they can just relate to different requirements and conditions.

Often cooling capacity figures displayed for the product are from the electrical rating conditions. The other main method of testing ratings of air conditioners is to ISO5151 standard – this method is under standardised controlled conditions and allows more direct comparison between models.

  • What is the difference between "reverse cycle" caravan air conditioners and "heating element" caravan air conditioners?

Hi, great question. These descriptions relate to how the heating/cooling works in air conditioners. ‘Heat Exchange’ units use heat exchange to cool and an electrical heat element to warm. It’s not the most efficient heating method, but it works no matter how cold it is outside.
Reverse cycle units are the more common type and they use a compressor whether heating or cooling. This is more efficient method but for some models can be an issue when there’s ice in the outside air.

There are more Reverse Cycle models available and it is the most popular type of RV air conditioner – customers that opt for Heating Element style air conditioners typically plan to spend long periods in cold temperatures.

  • Our caravan has a thicker roof approx 100+ mill and apparently there is a kit to suit, can you supply and what price please?

Hi, yes there is a Harrier Thick Roof Duct Kit (listed as an additional accessory) which allows fitment of the Harrier Inverter A/C unit to RV's with a roof panel thickness greater than 60mm (up to around 108mm).  The Kit includes duct sections, and longer bolts as can be ordered in addition to the main Harrier A/C unit.

  • Looking at a roof top caravan air conditioner - What are the noise ratings (dBA)? And which is the quietest?

Unfortunately caravan air conditioner manufacturers don’t provide dBA ratings with their unit specifications, which is a pity because it is a hot topic among caravan enthusiasts.

All of the models we stock are premium brands and we have had no feedback from customers that the noise of their caravan air conditioner model purchased from us is too loud, or keeping them awake/disturbing them during the air con operation.

Referring to specific models, a couple of the more popular caravan air conditioner options are:

    • The FreshJet 7 has a variable speed inverter compressor, making its operation very quiet for its size (its designed for vehicles up 7.5 metres in length).
    • The Dometic Aircommand Ibis MK3 model (designed for vehicles up to 6.5 metres in length) has improved its high speed fan operation from previous models, also making it a very quiet roof top caravan air conditioner.
    • The latest release from Dometic; The Dometic Aircommand MK4 model (designed for vehicles up to 7 metres in length) features a new-generation compressor with inverter technology which ensures that vibration is minimised, creating a more pleasant environment. In addition to this, the quiet environment that the Ibis 3 achieved has been replicated. Both of these features make it one of the quiestest air conditioners in the market.
  • Hi, I have noticed that you say that this air con will run comfortably off a 2000w inverter - what is the lowest sized inverter that could be used?

Hi - yes, the Dometic FreshJet 7 Series Plus will start and run on any 2000w inverter generator. The manufacturer (Dometic) recommend a 2000w generator, nothing smaller. Many thanks

  • Hi, does the FreshJet 7 Series A/C unit have air distribution boards on all four sides? Thanks

Hi Don, no the FreshJet 7 has oscillating outlet vents on the front and back only.  The sides have vents for air intake. Many thanks.

  • Does this air conditioner have a very low speed fan for comfortable use when sleeping once desired temp is achieved?

Hi Don, the unit has an 'innovative sleep mode function' which reduces the compressor speed, in addition to the usual fan speeds, to further reduce the noise and vibration levels while sleeping. Thank you

  • Hi there, can you recommend anyone who would install this in a horse float for me? - Ipswich, QLD area. Many thanks, Jenean

Hi Jenean, any local electrician or electrical contractor can undertake the install.

Fitting and installing a rooftop Air Conditioner in a Recreational Vehicle is a very simple task for a qualified electrical contractor.

If you are still needing help finding someone, you can always contact the manufacturer (Dometic) directly on:  1800 21 21 21  and ask for an associated RV Air-conditioning specialist in your region. Many thanks

  • Is it possible to connect a drain to air con to control were water runs on caravan roof .Regards Kevin.

    Hi Kevin,

Unfortunately the Harrier only has the standard drainage channels. There is no way to reroute this sorry.

  • Hi there, our bus (Toyota Coaster) is 7m and currently has no air conditioning at all which is hell.. We are looking at buying the Dometic FreshJet 7 Series Plus Roof Top Air Conditioner...this might be a stupid question but can the air con be on and running while we are driving?

    Hi Michelle,

These air conditioners require mains power to operate.

The only way you could have the unit running when the vehicle was in operation would be if you had a large enough 12V to 240V inverter.

  • My Dometic branded air conditioner shows p7 on the panel which I presume is an error code but the books do not reference it. Can you help pleasePeter

    Hi Peter,

We would recommend contacting Dometic on 1800 21 21 21 for assistance.

  • i am replacing a dometic B3300 with a harrier plus should this be ok

Hi There, It should be fine. The Freshjet 7 can either go into a 360 x 360mm or 400 x 400mm opening. So just double your roof opening beforehand.

    Regards

  • I am replacing an Aircommand Wren. Will the Harrier fit without roof midifications

Hi There, the Freshjet 7 can fit a 360 x 360mm or 400 x 400 mm roof opening so you would most likely need to do a slight modification as the Wren is 356 x 356mm according to the user manual. Cheers

  • What is the largest size Caravan this will cool?

    Hi There,

Best for Vehicle Length-  Up to 7.5m

    Regards,

  • How can I best optimise the performance of my roof-top air conditioner?

    Hi there,

Here are some tips to best optimise the performance of your roof top air conditioner:

    • Clean the filters of the air distribution box regularly.
    • If your caravan has been sitting in direct sunlight for a long period of time, use the 'ventilation' mode with the windows open for a while before switching to the 'cooling' mode.
    • Avoid opening doors and windows as much as possible when the air conditioner is running.
    • Regularly remove leaves and dirt from the ventilation grilles of the roof top air conditioner. Make sure you do not damage the grilles in the process.

    Thanks for your question.

  • Does the unit come pre gassed ready to go or does it need to be charged?

    Hi There,

The Dometic Freshjet 7 is pre gassed from factory and is ready to install.

  • Can you please describe the draining system ? Does the long part of the aircon need to be facing the rear of the vehicle ?

    Hi There,

The Dometic FreshJet 7 Series Plus has two condensation water drainage channels (one on either side).

These channels allow condensation to flow on to the roof of the caravan to be evaporated.

Please click here to see the installation manual.

  • What is the ambient temperature range for the Harrier V2? at present in the West Kimberley region of WA and current AC shuts down around lunch time with temp at around 44 degrees.

    Hi There,

The Operating Temperature Range for the Dometic Harrier is: -2 to 52°C

  • Can you advise of the current how many amps does it draw when operated in the 'sleep mode function"

    Hi There,

Unfortunately Dometic do not advise current ratings for all modes on this air conditioner sorry.

  • Gday,I would like to install an air conditioner to our small house boat, the area is only3.5x 4 m, would this unit be ok for that area, if so do I need a H frame as it is a near flex aluminium planked roof, and I've got a Honda 2kva gen set, as long as n

    Hi There,

We would expect this airconditioner to be suitable for your application, though Dometic do not recommend the use of their air conditioners on boats.

In reagrd to the requiremnt for an H Frame, if the roof is extremely flexible, the frame would be required.

The Honda generator you have will be suitable for this air conditioner.

  • I have an off grid cabin wired for 240v. Can it be easily installed on a gradual sloping cabin roof with very little roof space?

    Hi There,

We would recommend contacing Dometic for advice on installation on a sloping roof.

    They can be contacted on 1800 21 21 21.

  • I have an older version of airconditioner fitted to the motorhome and will not start on an 8000watt inverter, keeps throwing the inverter offline can you make any suggestions that would help with this problem

    Hi There

It is very hard to say what the issue may be exatly.

We would suggest having the air conditioner looked at by a professional.

  • IS this a direct replacement for Harrier Inverter? My Harrier inverter has stopped cooling and visible oil leak from compressor

    Hi There

    It should be a direct replacement, as the Freshjet 7 Series Plus suits Roof opening (W x D mm) 360 x 360 / 400 x 400 mm

    Kind Regards

  • Can you ship to the UK?

    Hi There

Unfortuanlety we do not ship overseas.

    Kind Regards

  • Can this unit be fitted into the roof space of a kenworth truck or any truck.

    Hi There

We have a specific type of air conditoner for trucks; The Dometic CoolAir RTX2000 24V Truck Air Conditioner.

    Kind Regards

  • Can the remote be repaired, cracked glass? Can I purchase a new remote, 8837where can I get it and what is the cost?

    Hi There

You might be able consult a Dometic Service agent regarding possible repairs.

New remotes can be purchased from our website SKU: 82-EC-535EC01

    Kind Regards

  • I am replacing an Ibis 3 mounted on a caravan what modification required.

    Hi There

You should not require any modifications to fit the Harrier in place of the IBIS 3. They both fit in the same openings as one another.

  • Hi I was looking at purchasing a Freshjet 7 Series Air Conditioner and was wondering why they look the same?

Hi, Yes, they do look the same as they have the same ADB, which is marked as FreshJet 7 Lite. The design of the ADB is in line with the IBIS4. However, the air conditioners themselves are very different, even though they have the same ADB.

  • We have a 1979 Bedford bus-motorhome. We plan to travel around Aust, and we have a 2kva generator. What Aircon do you recommend? Bus is 10 metres long. Cheers

Lucky you mate!  This is an easy recommendation:  with your 2kVA (2000 watt) generator and size of your RV, we would certainly recommend the Dometic FreshJet 7 Series Lite Roof Top Air Conditioner.  The will easily start and run from your sizzed generator and the size of this A/C model will suit your larger type of RV.

    Many thanks, and happy travels!

  • Hi I saw there was a new Harrier Plus Air Conditioner. What is the difference between the old Harrier and the new Freshjet 7 models?

Thanks for your question. There are several upgrades including:

    • A weight reduction of 45kg to 44kg (1kg reduction)
    • The compressor in the new model is a New Generation Variable Speed compressor in comparison to a variable speed compressor. This reduces the vibration of the unit and increases the efficiency
    • The nominal compressor capacity has decreased from 3675W to 3600W
    • The rated cooling capacity has decreased, and heating capacity have increased in the new model
    • The start-up current has increased in the new model from less than 6.5A to less than 6.9A
    • An additional fan speed has been added to the new model featuring a Turbo Speed for faster cooldown

Thanks for knowledgeable advice. The purchase and delivery then were very easy.

Domestic freshjet7 aircon

Very Happy with unit & installation ease.

Should have done it earlier

26 September 2024

We had an old Dometic 3000+ air conditioner on our van and were tired of it cutting in and out every few minutes as it tried to control the temperature. It was time for a change. Started reading about Dometic’s latest Freshjet Plus and it sounded like the go. Pulled the pin and placed the order with Caravan RV Camping. That was a very smooth and easy process and next thing the new unit arrives without fuss. Installation was quick and easy and now we are sitting in our van in total comfort with a hardly noticeable sound as the inverter technology does its stuff. We are super impressed with the unit and the way it performs. Purchasing it from Caravan RV Camping was an extremely quick & easy process and delivery was quicker than expected. I wish we had replaced the old unit way earlier!
