Q & A
-
What happens when the battery is fully charged?
The DC to DC's inbuilt MPPT has a Voltage Sensitive Relay, which will pick this up and only trickle charge the battery and maintain full charge status.
-
With no screen, how do I change the type of battery? (MYG)
You will find a button on the PV+ and ALT+ side of the charger. Pressing this will begin to display different colours with each representing a battery type. Refer to page 15 of the operations manual, to identify your battery type.
-
How much solar will the charger be able to handle?
The charger has a maximum solar input of 400W
-
Can this unit be used with a smart alternator?
It is possible to use this battery charger with both conventional and smart alternators. The IGN Signal Wire that comes with the unit must be used to connect the charger to the smart alternator through the vehicle ignitions. Smart alternators have a controlled charging output based on operating conditions and the standard/traditional alternator has a fixed voltage when charging.
-
When the service battery is completely charged, what will happen?
With the help of an integrated Voltage Sensitive Relay (VSR), this Renogy DC to DC MPPT on-board battery charger can trickle charge both the starting battery and the house battery while maintaining a fully charged state. In order to prevent charging interference, the VSR also guarantees dependable isolation between the house battery and the starting battery.
-
Which battery types is the charger compatible with?
Gel, AGM, Flooded, and Lithium batteries can all be used with this controller; however, after installed, please make sure the battery type is selected correctly. Please refer to pages 12 and 15 of the Manual Book for information on battery settings.
-
Since there is not a display screen, how do I adjust the battery?
To switch the battery type, locate the push button on both the PV+ and ALT+ sides of the DCDC. Press and hold the button, and observe the LED displaying various colors, each representing a specific battery type. For further guidance, consult the manual, specifically page 15 for the Battery Type LED reference.
NOTES
- Ensure correct polarity to avoid injury or damage to the device.
- Clean battery poles before connecting charger and battery. Use cables with adequate cross-section, and securely tighten nuts and bolts to prevent overheating from loose connections.
- Exercise caution to avoid over-torquing terminals on the DCDC, as it may cause irreparable damage (Torque should not exceed 16 N-m / 3.3 ft-lb).
- Follow color-coding for cables
- Red: positive connection
- Black: negative connection
- If the battery charger is simultaneously connected to the starting battery and solar panels, the maximum input current for each will be 15A. If the charger connects to only one of the two DC inputs, the maximum input current will be 30A.
