Storm Season Protection Tips for Your Caravan

Storm Season Protection Tips for Your Caravan

With storm season fast approaching, it’s a good idea to plan ahead to make sure you don’t have to get into a queue with other caravanners trying to book into local caravan repair centres. Especially if you have a trip planned for just around the corner. Employ these quick tips to make sure your home on wheels is safe and sound from the harsh elements of mother nature this storm season.

1. Get Insured

While it won’t physically protect your caravan during a storm, it’s good to have peace of mind no matter what happens. Whether your van is work $15,000 or $90,000 it pays to have cover in case anything happens. You don’t want to learn this one the hard way.

2. Invest in a Good Caravan Cover

To protect your van from any debris, heavy rain as well as the wind, investing in a sturdy caravan cover is worth it. It comes down to personal preference and budget of course, but you can’t go wrong with many of the products currently on the market. Our best selling caravan cover brands include Aussie Traveller and Camec.

3. Alternative Storage Options

If you aren’t in the position to have a shed or under cover protection for your caravan, it may be worth looking into your local caravan storage options. Storing your caravan securely for storm season will cost you, but similar to insurance it’s a good way to sleep through the storms - knowing your van is safely secured.

4. Trees & other loose items

Avoid parking your van under trees or near loose, unsecured items.  Ensure that any surrounding trees are regularly checked for branches that may come loose.  Apart from trees, make sure to remove or secure any loose items in your yard or storage area to prevent damage from flying debris.

Staying In Your RV During A Storm?

If you are staying in your caravn whilst a storm hits, try these precautionary actions:

  • Pack Away Non-Essential Items: Any items kept outside should be packed away or secured safely. If you have an awning, take down your awning as soon as posisble, as high winds and flying debris can easily cause damage. It is a good idea if you have any sunscreens or sidescreens, to pack these away too to avoid them coming loose and flapping in the wind. You should also make sure that all hatches and windows are safely secure and locked where possible.

  • Park Safely: Avoid parking under trees, especially in windy conditions as well as lightning storms.

  • Safety Kit: Make sure you have safety items readily available and up to date including a first aid kit, fresh batteries and adequate lighting. Smoke detectors and fire blankets should be checked regularly and replaced as needed.

Need Back Up Power?

During storms, backup power sources like generators and power stations become crucial for maintaining electricity. Generators, often fueled by gasoline or diesel, provide a reliable supply of electricity, ensuring that essential appliances and systems remain operational. Portable power stations, usually equipped with rechargeable batteries, offer a cleaner and quieter alternative, suitable for powering smaller devices and electronics.
