DIY Off-Grid 4WD Set Up With Fewlapsaroundthesun

G’day everyone! We are Zane and Casey, two 28-year-olds who started travelling Australia at the end of 2022 with an initial plan to do a 'lap' of the country. But, like our name suggests, I think deep down we knew this would turn into a 'few' laps! After two and a half years on the road, we now refer to ourselves as full-time travellers with no plans to stop anytime soon!

Travelling Australia was always a dream of ours, with Zane being a third-generation traveller (that’s right, his great-grandparents travelled Australia back in the day) and Casey an adventurer who has always had a ‘live life to the fullest’ attitude! After establishing our careers - Casey as a Critical Care Registered Nurse and Zane as a Plumber - and working full-time for several years, we decided it was finally time to hit the road, stopping here and there for work along the way.

We love the life we’ve created and have found the perfect work-life balance for ourselves. We’re passionate about capturing our adventures and sharing moments from life on the road on our Instagram and now YouTube page @fewlapsaroundthesun. We love all things fishing, spearfishing, surfing, camp cook-ups, and good times… oh, and coffee!

We are exploring this beautiful country in our trusty 79 Series, rooftop tinnie, and off-road caravan. After camping in many different setups over the years—from a swag to a rooftop tent, camper trailer, and hybrid camper—we’ve found the perfect setup for our travels. When travelling Australia became our lifestyle, our goal shifted to having more power, more comfort, and more space. We also wanted the flexibility to have our car set up for off-grid living, allowing for remote adventures and campouts off the beaten track.

We have a newly upgraded base—our Wonderland RV Amaroo 18’6, which we’ve named Alice—kitted out with an upgraded Enerdrive power system and Dometic appliances that have never let us down! We recently installed the Enerdrive Adventurer electrical system in the canopy of our car, which features a 2000-watt inverter, 40A DC-DC charger, 40A AC charger, and Simarine battery monitor—perfect for running our Dometic NRX80 upright fridge, lights, induction cooker, and coffee machine.

Coffee machine – it’s no secret we both LOVE a coffee, and our day doesn’t begin without one. There is nothing better than a hot barista-style coffee, and we are so grateful to have a power system that can run a coffee machine every morning without having to think twice about our battery percentage.

We still have so many locations yet to explore and have only scratched the surface! But right now, our favourite destination would definitely be the Coral Coast of Western Australia. Those Ningaloo blues—we just can’t seem to get enough of them! I’d say half of our travels have been spent along this coastline, having spent time here in both peak season and off-season. We’ve had some of the best fishing, diving, and beachfront camping here, whilst also having the opportunity to work within the town of Exmouth and at Bullara Station! It really feels like a second home to us! There is so much of this beautiful country to see, and we will eventually head up north towards the Kimberleys, where we plan to tackle the Gibb River Road for the first time and enter the Northern Territory!
