New Dometic Portable Fridges: What's The Right One For You?

New Dometic Portable Fridges: What's The Right One For You?

Dometic has long been the go-to brand for reliable portable cooling, and now, they’ve taken things to the next level with their latest CFF model, and CFX5 and CFX2 ranges. These new models boast cutting-edge technology, improved energy efficiency, and rugged durability. But which fridge is best for you? Lets compare the good, better, and best options to find out:

  • Good: Dometic CFF Series – A reliable, entry-level option with essential cooling performance.
  • Better: Dometic CFX2 Series – A step up in durability, efficiency, and usability without the premium price tag.
  • Best: Dometic CFX5 Series – The top-tier choice with advanced features, insulation, and energy efficiency.

What Size Fridge Do You Need?

The Dometic CFF range is perfect for those who need a no-fuss fridge without all the extras. It offers four sizes to suit different needs. The 13L19L, and popular 45L single zone options are great for quick day trips, whereas the dual zone 50L and 70L models offer larger capaciy and cooling perfromance at an affordable price.

Notably, the CFF 50L Dual Zone has a low-profile design (407mm height) while still offering 50L of capacity, allowing it to fit perfectly under the tray in Ford Rangers and other vehicles with limited space.

The CFX2 series is exclusively made up of single-zone fridges and comes in four sizes: 28L, 37L, 45L, and 57L. This makes them a great choice for those who need a simple yet high-performance portable fridge.

The CFX5 series offers a broader selection, with seven size options ranging from a comapct 25L to a massive 94L model. For added versatility, this range also includes two dual-zone fridge/freezers in 75L and 94L, giving users the flexibility to run separate fridge and freezer compartments for longer trips. The CFX5 also offers one model - the CFX5 55IM - with an integrated ice-maker which can come in handy on summer adventures.

Which Has Better Build Quality?

The CFF, CFX2 and CFX5 Fridges are all built to handle the rigors of travel, but there are some key differences in materials and design. The CFF features a removable lid and convenient handles, but doesn't offer the same level of impressive durability that the CFX ranges can. The CFX2 range features a Polypropylene cabinet with reinforced corners for extra protection at a much better price point than the even tougher CFX5s. It also includes folding ABS handles, making transportation easy without adding unnecessary bulk.

The CFX5 range takes durability and insulation a step further with innovative gasket seal technology, which enhances insulation for improved cooling efficiency. While this does contribute slightly to energy efficiency, the difference is minimal. The CFX5s also include an integrated bottle opener, a handy feature for those enjoying a cold drink outdoors.

What About Energy Efficiency?

When it comes to energy efficiency, both the CFX2 and CFX5 outperform their predecessor, the CFX3, as well as the CFF range. The VMSO3 and VMSO3.5 compressors used in these fridges offer notable improvements in power consumption and the CFX5 range includes Vacuum Insulated Panels, which make it slightly more energy efficient than the CFX2 - but only by a small margin. This means that for the lower price point of the CFX2, you’re still getting premium Dometic performance without the premium price tag!

Let's Compare Usability and Connectivity

While the CFF models don't offer any Bluetooth or Mobile connectivity, the CFX2 and CFX5 ranges are designed for modern convenience, featuring seamless integration with the new Dometic Mobile App. This allows users to control and monitor their fridge settings remotely via Bluetooth or Wi-Fi, adding extra convenience when you're on the road.

Additionally, both models come with USB outlets for charging electronics, but the CFX5 has the capacity to charge larger appliances thanks to its 18W USB port. Another key difference is the display system - the CFX2 features a simple 4-digit LED display with soft-touch buttons, while the CFX5 boasts a high-resolution, colour operating display for a more premium user experience. However, if you're looking to save money, the simpler display of the CFX2 is still fully functional and effective.

What Are The Key Upgrades?

With enhanced insulation, user-friendly controls, and added convenience features, the CFX5 series offers noticeable upgrades—but are they worth the extra cost? Or does the CFX2 deliver all the efficiency and usability you need at a better price? Let’s compare them side by side.
