Q & A
-
How often do I need to service my Dometic RV/Caravan appliances?
Dometic recommend servicing their gas appliances on a yearly basis, even if the vehicle has not been used. Additionally, bear in mind that insects can built nests in the gas appliances which will cause the appliances to stop working. It can also cause potentially dangerous scenarios.
For other appliances, such as refrigerators and air conditioners, to ensure the appliances to work efficiently and last longer it is recommended to clean the condenser.
-
What do I need to know about installing an absorption gas fridge in my Caravan?
To ensure the correct fittings and ventilation set-up for the specific absorption fridge model, please see the link to the INSTALLATION GUIDE/MANUAL in the Product Description.
A 3-Way absorption refrigerator requires to be installed and certified by a qualified and licensed gasfitter. Illegal or improperly installed absorption fridge will void the manufacturer's warranty and could pose a safety risk.

I want to run my absorption on 12v power source, is this ok?
An absorption 3-way fridge is designed to be run on gas as a power source. This means that gas will be the most efficient power source.
It is only recommended to use the 12-volt setting on an absorption fridge when the vehicle is running. Otherwise, the 12-volt can exhaust the power source (the battery) very fast. It is important to remember this when you have parked and turned off your vehicle!
-
I'm looking for a Caravan Fridge: would you recommend an absorption (gas) fridge, or a compressor (12v) fridge?
This depends on what you expect of your trip and what is important for you.
Choose an absorption fridge if:
- You are free camping for extended periods.
- You want a fridge to run from your gas bottle.
Free campers often choose a 3-way model so that they do not have to worry about enough battery power during their prolonged trips away. However, remember that they are not designed to be running on 12V for an extended period, it is only for while the vehicle is running.
Choose a compressor fridge if:
- You prefer consistent cooling capacity on your fridge.
- You require a fridge with high efficiency on battery power.
You will require an efficient cooling capacity in hot climate.
The leading brand within compressor fridges are Dometic Waeco, Bushman, Evakool and Engel. All these brands are high quality RV fridges that can provide a desired temperature quickly.
We have found that compressor fridges are becoming more trendier compare to the absorption fridge. Many of our customers choose to replace their old 3-way absorption fridge to a new 12V compressor fridge. With today's improvements in solar and battery performance, you can run your 12V compressor fridge very efficiently and will keep your food & drinks very cool.

Does the Dometic Fridge range come with all parts needed to install and operate?
Hi there, an upright Dometic 3 Way Fridge requires correct installation and ventilation to ensure optimum performance and safe operation. You can see listed on the product page under the Accessory List there are Vents and Gas Flue kits required as part of the installation. On the INSTALLATION GUIDE document, you can see what recommended vents and gas flues go with your particular sized fridge.
For customers buying a Dometic fridge to replace their existing one, they often already have the required installation accessories (vents and flues) and may not need to add them to their fridge purchase. Thanks.

I am traveling to Darwin and I have heard that some 3 way fridges are better than others at performing in tropical climates with very high ambient temperatures. Which one of these models is rated?
Thanks very much for the inquiry. Climate Class Ratings for 3 - Way Fridges are a hot topic (pun intended). The European Union (CEN) fridge performance standard is becoming increasingly accepted and the main rating that caravan enthusiasts look out for is the "T" rating.
Climate class ratings are as follows:
- T Rating (tropical) - are designed and rated to work up to 43 degrees C
- ST Rating (sub-tropical) - are designed and rated to work up to 36 degrees C
- SN and N (sub normal and normal) - are designed and rated to work up to 32 degrees C.
- All of the Dometic [RM] range of fridges are T - Rated, Except the RM2350, RM2355.
The RM8501, RM2355 and RM2350 are ST rated

What is the main difference between UES and AES?
Universal Energy Selection (UES), can operate both in auto or manual selection mode. Basically has both functions of Automatic Energy Selection (AES) and Manual Energy Selection (MES) in one. The user can select if they want auto or not.
AES, operates in auto selection only, does not have a manual mode apart from gas operation with the AES function turned off.

With regards to the Dometic Waeco Upright fridge models. Can I choose which side of the door the hinge goes on?
Yes. Some models require the customer to choose a hinge position prior to delivery. You will notice a Left Or Right Hand hinge option on the product page.
With all the other models you will be supplied with a hinge conversion kit. The door will come with the hinge on the right hand side as standard. You can easily change it over using the kit. Feel free to view the Installation instructions on the product page for each model.
-
Do you require a 12v DC power supply to operate fridge on gas or 240v mains power?
Not all Dometic 3-Way Absorption Fridge models. Models such as the RM2350, RM2453, RM2553, RM4601, RUA6408X and RUA8408X are manually selected to gas and have a push button ignition which means they do not need a 12v electrical connection ie they are manual ignition. They reduce gas flame to a pilot flame when not needing to cool further/cycle off and increase flame when they do.
On the other hand all MES - Manual Energy Selection , AES - Automatic Energy Selection & UES (Selectable AES & MES modes) all require a 12v feed to give basic function even on AC power. One of the things this enables is the engaging of the gas supply and the ignition of the gas.
The MES/AES/UES models disengage gas supply when cycling. When cycling back on the gas supply is engaged and the ignition automatically & electronically engaged.
